ラバウルとチッタゴンで大きな空戦



昭和17年8月3日、大々的な空戦の応酬がありました。まずポートモレスビーから50機のB-17E Fortressと17機のB-24D Liberatorがラバウル空襲にやってきました。ラバウルではゼロ戦(A6M3b Zero)の2個飛行隊がCAPにあたっていて、合計60機が迎撃しました。来襲12分前の探知だったので、爆撃前の空戦に参加できたゼロ戦は多くはなかったのですが、五月雨的にスクランブルしたゼロ戦と四発爆撃機の間で爆撃後の空戦がかなり長く続きました。投弾することのできた爆撃機は63機で536発の500ポンド爆弾が投下されましたが、Airbase hits 2、Runway hits 24で済んだのはCAPが爆撃機の悪巧みを妨害してくれたからだと思います。屠龍2機と百式司偵1機が地上で破壊されてしまいましたが、工兵のはたらきで今朝のラバウル飛行場のダメージは施設に4、滑走路に3だけでした。CAPにあたったゼロ戦の損失が10機に対して、B-17E Fortressには11機、B-24D Liberatorにも7機の損失が報告されていて、今日のラバウル空襲は日本側の防衛成功だったと思います。今の時期の四発爆撃機の補充数は多くはないはずなので、連合軍側がもう少し自重してくれることを期待したいと思います。
次にビルマのMagweからチッタゴンに二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo)51機が2波にわかれてsweepを行いました。チッタゴンではHurricane IIb Trop、Hurricane IIc Trop、P-39D Airacobra、P-40E WarhawkがCAPをしていました。二式戦の損失機10機に対して、連合軍側はHurricane IIb Tropが1機、Hurricane IIc Tropが10機、P-39D Airacobraが3機、P-40E Warhawkが10機の損失が報告されていました。10対24は満足すべきスコアですから、これを続けて連合軍戦闘機戦力をすり減らし、ゆくゆくはチッタゴン飛行場の爆撃を実施したいと思っています。日本の爆撃機がもっと丈夫ならこんな苦労は不要なんですがね。
おかえしに連合軍はビルマのマンダレー飛行場に、P-38E LightningによるsweepとBlenheim IVとHudson IIIa、Wellington Ic、B-17E Fortress、B-25C Mitchell、B-26 Marauder、LB-30 Liberatorによる爆撃をしかけてきました。P-38E Lightningや Blenheim IVとHudson IIIaはチッタゴンから、航続距離が長くしかも貴重な四発爆撃機はカルカッタから飛来しているようです。ビルマにおける日本側の最重要根拠地はMagweです。他の飛行場を爆撃から守るのに充分な戦闘機戦力の配備は難しいことと、一つの飛行場が爆撃で機能停止になっても全部の飛行場を機能停止させるほどの戦力がこの時期の連合軍にないと思うので、Magwe以外の飛行場はほぼノーガード状態です。今日のマンダレーは百式司偵1機が地上で破壊されるとともに、今朝になっても飛行場施設に56、滑走路に78のダメージが残っていて、機能を停止させられてしまいました。Magweから距離10ヘクスのカルカッタは無理だとしても、距離6ヘクスのチッタゴンの方は、sweepでCAPの戦闘機を削って、早く爆撃に向かいたいところです。
昨日のエントリでー、連合軍の駆逐艦2隻が衝突で沈没したことをお報せしました。その2隻の沈没地点を見ながら、なにやらきな臭い気配が濃厚だなと感じました。というのも、アメリカ西海岸とオーストラリアを結ぶ航路を航行する艦船は、西行きでも東行きでも、このあたりではマップ上を水平に移動することがふつうだからです。ところが昨日沈没した2隻の沈没地点は、マップ上で中1ヘクスおいて右上と左下を結ぶライン上でした。西行きだとするとシドニーに行くつもりだったのが途中でニュージーランド行きに変更したような感じで、わざわざルーガンビルの二式大艇の哨戒圏内を通る点がとても不自然です。東行きだとするとEfateに向かっているかのような航路で、見逃せない動きだと感じたわけです。
一日たって今日のマップをみると、昨日の沈没地点2つを結ぶ線の北東の方に、連合軍のTFが3つ存在すること報告されていました。うち二つは同じヘクスを北東に航行していて、片方のTFは空母6隻を含んだ9隻、もう一方はPG, AMCを含んだ9隻のTFです。そこから南西2ヘクスのところに激しい雨で観察が不十分だということですが2隻からなるTFが北東に航行している事が報告されています。
昨日の時点では、空挺部隊しかいないEfateの飛行場や港を拡張するための工兵部隊を送り込むためのTFかと思っていましたが、空母を含んだ陣容からしてルーガンビル攻略を目的とした上陸船団の可能性の方が高いだろうと感じます。ルーガンビルにはAir HQがいないので、陸攻の飛行隊は配備せず二式大艇と百式司偵がいるだけです。大艇と司偵だけでも南太平洋をオーストラリアに向けて航行する船団を覗き見されるのが連合軍にとっては嫌なのかも知れませんね。
今日の哨戒ではAMC一隻の存在が報告されているだけで、上陸に重要なAPやAKをともなっているのかどうかが不明です。でももし上陸するつもりなら、占領に充分な兵力を連れて来ていることを覚悟しなければなりません。まず、ルーガンビルにいた二式大艇と百式司偵を7ヘクス北のNdeniに移動させました。また、ルーガンビルから距離12ヘクスのルンガに配備されている一式陸攻二個飛行隊にNaval Attackを指示しました。護衛にあたるのはゼロ戦(A6M2 Zero)一個飛行隊です。空母の艦載戦闘機がCAPをしているところに陸攻を向かわせるのにゼロ戦27機ではとても手薄で大きな損害を覚悟しなければなりません。でもいちばん手近なラバウルのゼロ戦隊は前述の四発爆撃機の空襲で疲れ気味なのです。ラバウル空襲はこれも狙っての企てだったんでしょう。あと、トラックからCV隼鷹・飛鷹とCVL日進を出航させましたが、これは明日のイベントには間に合いそうもありません。Efateの近くでパトロールしている潜水艦にも北上を支持したので、幸運があるといいのですが。ともあれ、あしたのリプレイがどうなるのか、楽しみというよりは心配が先に立つ一日をこれから過ごすことになります。
