ビルマの空戦で71機損失

昭和17年9月29日、数日ぶりにビルマのMagwe飛行場に2波の夜間空襲がありました。爆撃機に休養をとらせていたとみえて、今日は四発機46機を含めて合計58機と大挙しての来襲でした。Magwe配備の二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo)と二式複戦(Ki-45 KAIa Nick)各11機が迎撃しましたが、多勢に無勢で各1機が撃墜され、二式複戦はOps lossも1機ありました。飛行場への被害はAirbase hits 2、Airbase supply hits 1、Runway hits 11とそれほどでもなく、夜があける前にすべて修復されていたのですが、飛行機の地上での破壊14機を地味に痛く感じます。隣りのヘクスのミートキーナ飛行場の二式戦にも夜間のCAP(range 1)を指示してあるのですが、やはり迎撃には参加してくれませんでした。今晩は来襲11分前のレーダーでの探知と、7分前の聴音哨による発見でしたが、このくらいしか時間の余裕がないと、すでに空中にいる機でも間に合わないんでしょうかね。

そんなこんなで安眠できなかったMagweの飛行隊と、隣りのミートキーナの飛行隊の、一式戦(Ki-43-Ic Oscar)47機と百式重爆(Ki-49-IIa Helen)45機がインパ-ル飛行場を空襲しました。日本側の92機がまとまって一波で襲撃できれば良かったのですが、不眠による疲労と2カ所の飛行場から出発して空中集合しなければならないことから、3波に分かれての空襲になってしまいました。ビルマ国境近くの連合軍飛行場にはしばらくCAPが上がっていることがなく、今日もそうなら無問題だったのですが、インパール上空には77機のCAPがいました。一式戦21機と百式重爆23機が撃墜され、FlakやOps lossも合わせると、このサプライズ迎撃で一式戦と百式重爆ともに25機を失うことになりました。この作戦大成功の様子をリプレイでみながら、相手の方はしてやったりと思っているに違いありません。でもPBEMのこういうのって、やられた方はかなり凹みます。でも凹んでばかりもいられないので、反省点を挙げてみると、
  • 第一に、2日続けて同じところを爆撃することが多かったのが良くなかったと思います。毎日のようにビルマ国境近くのインド側の飛行場を爆撃してきましたが、暑いせい (私はエアコン使わない人なので)でまめに指示を変更するのが面倒だったんですよね。前日もインパールを爆撃していたので、連合軍側はかなり確信を持ってインパールでの迎撃ができたんだと思います。
  • 第二に、護衛戦闘機に一式戦(Ki-43-Ic Oscar)を使い続けていたこと。開戦時は陸軍戦闘機の主柱だったKi-43-Ic Oscarも、このゲームでは早くも旧式化してしまっています。CAPやsweepを担当している飛行隊と同じように、二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo)に機種変更しておくべきだったのでしょう。二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo)の在庫は現在150機くらいあるので機種変更も充分に可能だったのですが、それをしなかった理由があります。二式戦の航続距離(増槽付きで8ヘクス)だとMagweからレド(距離12ヘクス)爆撃の護衛ができないことです。レドは中国へのサプライ空輸のための飛行場で時々、爆撃したいのです。ビルマ北部のミートキーナから護衛させる手もあるのですが、ミートキーナはサプライ補給が安定せず(特に雨期)、また連合軍の爆撃で配備機が地上破壊される可能性がかなり高い点もありました。なので、飛行隊二つだけ一式戦(Ki-43-Ic Oscar)装備のままにしてありました。今月初めから武装が多少強化され航続距離が1伸びた一式戦(Ki-43-IIa Oscar)の生産が可能になりました。しかし、このKi-43-IIa Oscarでも旧式機であることには違いはありませんから、大きなラインで急速に生産をすすめる体制にはせず、合計で規模41になるライン二つで生産しています。数が揃ったらKi-43-IIa Oscarに機種転換する予定でしたが、ビルマのこれらの飛行隊よりも、ダーウィンからニューギニア南部のMeraukeを窺う飛行隊の一式戦の方を先にKi-43-Ic OscarからKi-43-IIa Oscarに機種変換しなければいけない情勢になっていたところなのでした。

今日は、トレス海峡のHorn Islandの泊地に潜入させていたSSX Ha-4がPG Moresbyの爆雷攻撃で沈没しました。前日に潜入させ、前日の段階で2回も見とがめられていたのに、もう一日と思ってそのままにしたのが失敗でした。飛行機の損失数が一日で71機にも達したことともあわせて、今日は厄日でした。
