史実ではオーストラリア西岸のエクスマスにアメリカ海軍の潜水艦の前進基地が置かれていたと思いますが、プレイ中のこのゲームではドットベースのままです。昭和17年9月18日、そのエクスマス近海で英巡洋艦と日本の艦隊との水上戦闘がありました。昨夜は月明53%で、しかも雨も降っていて視界が悪く、両軍とも3000ヤードで相手を視認しました。重巡DevonshireはType 273 SS Radarを搭載しているはずですが、この時期だとまだうまく使いこなせないのか、運が悪かったのかも。3000ヤードと近距離での戦闘開始だったので、最初の命中は重巡摩耶が重巡Devonshireに向けた酸素魚雷でした。幸先良しと思ったのですが、日本側が重巡1、軽巡2、駆逐艦4なのに対して、連合軍側は重巡2、軽巡2、駆逐艦3で、数的劣勢は否めず、砲撃を集中された軽巡那珂の損傷が大きくなり、駆逐艦夏潮に付き添われて離脱しました。また駆逐艦秋雲にオランダの駆逐艦Tjerk Hiddesの魚雷が命中し沈没しました。その後、両TFは離れてゆき、戦闘は終わりました。Escort TFで離脱した軽巡那珂はリプレイ中に沈没しました。Trackerをみると重巡Devonshireも沈没したとのことです。軽巡と駆逐艦一隻に重巡一隻なら、引き分けに近い戦果でしょうか。でも本当に沈没しているのかどうかは不明です。というのも今日もオペレーショナル・リポートに

などという残念な報せがありましたからね。アニメーション中に沈没音を聴取することができたもの以外は、疑ってかからなければいけないのだと思います。今日のエクスマス開戦後も、両軍のTFは同じヘクスにとどまっています。もういちど戦かうことができれば、残弾の数が少なくなっているはずの英軍巡洋艦に今度こそすっきり勝てたりはしないかなと期待しています。
