昭和17年9月9日、Meraukeにむけた日本側の措置はすべて空振りに終わりました。まず重巡古鷹、軽巡川内のTFはMeraukeのヘクスになにも発見できず、アンボンへ向けて帰途に着きました。そして、ホーランディアからMeraukeにsweep任務で向かったゼロ戦隊(A6M2とA6M3b)3波77機も、Merauke上空にCAPを発見することができませんでした。ダーウィンの一式陸攻はfatigueを癒すため、今日はお休みさせていたので空襲はこれでおしまい。そして、MeraukeとHorn Island周辺のトレス海峡に派遣した潜水艦4隻も護衛空母を含んだ連合軍TFと接触することはできませんでした。唯一、Horn Islandの南東のヘクスで哨戒中のI-169がDD Hughesの爆雷攻撃を受けたのみでした。
リプレイが終わってからマップを見てみると、Horn IslandのヘクスにDDやPTなどを含んだ複数の連合軍TFの存在が報告されていますが、護衛空母やAKは確認されていません。I-169を攻撃したDD HughesはきのうMeraukeのヘクスでDD Duncanを雷撃撃沈したI-156に爆雷で反撃した駆逐艦です。もしかするとこのDD Hughesと護衛空母を含んだTFはすでにトレス海峡を通過してオーストラリア東岸に避退してしまったのでしょうか。それにしては、TFがみえないし、爆撃で損傷した艦船が一晩でそんなに遠くまで航海できるのか不思議です。それとも日本側のsearch arcの届かない南方に避退したんでしょうか？いずれにせよ、不利だとみるとさっとひく緩急のつけかたに、相手の方のうまさを感じます。
ところで、きのう爆弾を命中させた3隻のCVEのうちCVE Long Islandは有名な護衛空母です。しかし残りの2隻CVE KittyhawkとCVE Hammondsportは初めて聞く名前でした。ぐぐってみるとこれら2隻は護衛空母ではなく、AKV(1943年6月までの呼称はAPV)、つまり商船改装の航空機輸送艦だったようです。写真を見ると全通甲板があるわけではないようで、CVEならこなせて当たり前の、航海中に搭載機を発艦させる任務をこなせたんでしょうか？詳しい方がいらしたら、ご教示下さい。
今日はセイロン島の東岸でI-155がxAK Deslockを攻撃し、魚雷を2本命中させて撃沈しました。Trackerで沈没艦船のリストをチェックしてみたところ、Sunk DeviceがScuttledとなっています。xAK Deslockはアニメーション画面終了とともに沈没音がきこえたので、なぜScuttledなんだろうと不思議に感じました。そこで、Sunk DeviceがScuttledになっている艦船が他にもないかTrackerでみてみると、図のように12隻ありました。うち11隻は連合軍側の艦船ですが、1隻だけxAK Tyoko Maruという日本船が含まれていました。私はxAK Tyoko Maruを自沈させたおぼえはないので、このSunk Deviceの欄のScuttledは、プレイヤーの指示による自沈ではなく、電子の艦長の判断による自沈なのでしょう。このゲームでは損傷のひどい艦船をプレイヤーが自沈させると、ふつうに沈没した時と比較して相手側に入るVPを10%少なくすることができるルールがあります。そのプレイヤー指示による自沈の場合には、Sunk Deviceの右の欄のScuttled?の欄にチェックが入るのでしょう、きっと。
もうひとつ、沈没艦船のリストをみていて気になることがありました。それは空母サラトガの消息です。先月の南太平洋海戦後、空母サラトガはしばらく沈没艦船のリストに載っていました。ところが9月5日に
