- ホーランディアを維持するためには、南に距離8ヘクスのMeraukeの飛行場(今は規模1)の拡張を妨害することが必要
- 9月14日にはホーランディア配置の九七重爆でMerauke飛行場を爆撃したが、再度のホーランディア空襲の危険とホーランディアのair supportの不足から、ホーランディアに重爆を配備し続けるのは当面難しい
- Merauke爆撃は距離13ヘクスのダーウィンから実施することになる
- 九七重爆は航続距離12ヘクスしかないので、ダーウィンからMeraukeを爆撃できない
- ダーウィンからMeraukeの爆撃は、ゼロ戦の護衛で一式陸攻が実施する
- 航続距離が13ヘクスの一式戦(Ki-43-IIa)と百式重爆の飛行隊をビルマからダーウィンに移動させる
- ホーランディアのCAPを手厚くするので、Merauke爆撃に合わせてsweepを実施することは難しい
これらを念頭において、まずはできることから着手ということで、昭和17年9月15日はダーウィンにいた高雄空の一式陸攻にMerauke爆撃を指示しました。高雄空は定数45機ですが20%はアラフラ海(ダーウィンとMeraukeの間の海)の海上哨戒に指示してあります。また、距離13ヘクスを護衛できる戦闘機はゼロ戦でもA6M2だけなので、護衛はA6M2装備の3rd Ku(たしかRA mod固有の部隊)です。
細かい点までは一致しないにしても、上記のこちらの思考プロセスの大筋を、連合軍側の中の人も辿ることができるだろうと思っていました。だとすれば、連合軍側の対策はMeraukeにCAPを上げることになります。9月14日にはMerauke上空にCAPはいませんでしたが、きっと15日にはCAPが上がっているだろうと予想しました。そこで護衛任務の3rd Kuには全力出撃を指示したのですが、蓋をあけてみると予想通り。今日のMerauke上空には18機のP-40E WarhawkがCAPしていました。お互いのこういったヨミあいと、そのヨミが的中したりはずれたりするあたりが、PBEMの面白さの秘密その一なんだとつくづく感じます。開発者がAIに工夫をこらしても、こういう点ではまだまだまだ。いちどPBEMに手を染めてしまうと、そのゲームでAIと対戦するのがばからしくなってしまうのもこのあたりが原因ですよね。
Merauke上空に到着したのは36機のゼロ戦(A6M2)の護衛と29機の一式陸攻でした。護衛戦闘機とCAPの戦闘ではCAPが有利というのが定評ですが、今日の対決は護衛戦闘機の方が数が多かったこともあって、ゼロ戦の損失7機(A2Aで5機、Ops loss 2機)に対して、P-40E Warhawkの損失12機(A2Aで9機、Ops loss 3機)と有利に戦闘を終えることができました。一式陸攻はFlakとOps lossで各1機損失となりましたが、A2A損失はゼロでした。戦果はAirbase hits 1とRunway hits 6で、もう少したくさん命中させてほしかったなという感じでした。
リプレイが終わってマップをみてみると、Meraukeには飛行機のアイコンがついていません。連合軍側はMerauke飛行場に戦闘機を配備するのは危険とみて、Horn IslandからLRCAPさせたのだろうと想像します。距離4ヘクスのLRCAPとはいえ、航続距離の短い連合軍戦闘機にとっては楽な仕事ではなかったでしょう。距離13ヘクス(ラバウルからガダルカナル島ルンガまでが14ヘクス)も飛んだ護衛のゼロ戦がうまく戦えたのは、LRCAP相手だったからということもあったでしょう。
今日の戦闘で7機失った3rd Kuゼロ戦隊のパイロットの死傷者はKIA 1名、WIA 1名、MIA 1名で、Morale 99、Fatigue 12。2機失った高雄空陸攻隊のパイロットの死傷者はKIA 2名で、Morale 99、Fatigue 10。電子のパイロットたちも今日の空戦を勝利と認識しているようで、moraleは高いままです。連合軍側はポートモレスビーから新手の戦闘機をMeraukeに送り込んでCAPさせるか、Horn Islandに送り込んでLRCAPさせるか。Meraukeは爆撃を受けるし、Horn IslandからのLRCAPは疲労がたまるし、難しい選択です。日本側もかなり疲れてはいますが、もう一日続けてMerauke爆撃に出撃してもらおうと思います。連合軍はまたMeraukeにAPDのコンボイを送り込んできていますし。
