英巡がPort Headland艦砲射撃


昭和17年9月17日、日が暮れると、昨日予想したとおり北西オーストラリアのPort Headlandに連合軍の艦砲射撃TFがやってきました。参加したメンバーは重巡 Devonshire、Dorsetshireと軽巡 Hobart、Achilles、Leanderと3隻の駆逐艦で、昨日の潜水艦の報告よりもだいぶ豪華な顔ぶれです。英重巡には水上機は搭載されていないんでしたっけ。弾着観測機が飛んだ報告はありませんでしたが、Port Headlandには舞鶴鎮守府第三特別陸戦隊と飛行機整備をする中隊しかいないので、反撃を心配せずのびのびと射撃しているようで、Port hits 34、Port supply hits 8の被害を受けました。

艦砲射撃を終えたTFはさっと行方をくらますかと思っていたのですが、明るくなってもPort Headlandの沖に居座っていました。ベータパッチをあててプレイしたときに、 艦砲射撃TFの挙動に仕様変更か艦砲射撃の仕様変更でBB Warspiteを撃沈(したらしい)というエントリーで書いたように艦砲射撃後にすぐに遁走しないことが、オフィシャルのパッチでも起きるようです。Port Headland基地から連絡がいったか、または哨戒機が報告したのか、はやくも午前中にチモール島クーパンからの九六陸攻(G3M2 Nell)13機が英艦隊の上空に現れました。クーパンからPort Headlandは距離17ヘクスあるので、雷装ではなく250kg爆弾を2発づつ抱えての攻撃です。雷撃もですが、陸攻の爆撃は戦闘艦には滅多に当たらないので、期待せずにみていたところ、やはり一発も命中しませんでした。レーダーで攻撃の40分前には探知されていたので、近くに連合軍の戦闘機がいたら護衛のついていない九六陸攻はCAPに殲滅されていたところですが、さいわいこのあたりにそういう連合軍の根拠地はありません。でも高度6000フィートからの爆撃だったせいもあって、帰還途中に墜落した機も含めてFlakに3機撃墜されました。

つい先日までクーパンには一式陸攻の部隊もいました。しかしニューギニア南岸のMeraukeへの対応のため、ダーウィンに移動させたばかりです。連合軍側のSIGINTは優秀ですから、その移動を察知し、クーパンからは一式陸攻がいなくなったと判断してPort Headlandの艦砲射撃にやってきたのかもしれません。ここで悔やまれるのは、ダーウィンへは一式陸攻ではなく、九六陸攻の方を移動させるべきだったかという点です。一式陸攻なら距離17ヘクスまで雷装で攻撃できるので。九六陸攻が雷装で攻撃できるのは15ヘクスまでなんですよね。失敗した。

Port supply hits 8。前夜の艦砲射撃もそうでしたが、飛行場には着弾がなく港ばかりを狙うのはどうしてなんだろうとリプレイをみながら不思議に感じていました。リプレイが済んでPort Headlandの情報画面を開いてみて疑問が氷解。Port Headlandの港は規模2(3)ですが、飛行場の方は0(6)と飛行場はまだ存在しないのでした。存在しない飛行場は砲撃できないという仕様なんでしょうね。でもこれ、飛行場の建設を始めていて0から1にむけて何%か進んでいたらどうなんでしょう?Port Headlandは飛行場の建設には着手していなかったので真相は不明ですが、建設中の飛行場なら艦砲射撃で進行を妨害できた方がいいように思います。ともあれ、2回の艦砲射撃でPort Headlandの港には30のダメージが残っていました。

スクリーンショットを見ていただくとおわかりになると思いますが、Port Headlandの北西7ヘクスのところに、重巡摩耶、軽巡那珂、神通と駆逐艦4隻のTFがいます。昨日、連合軍の軽巡と駆逐艦のTFの存在が潜水艦から報告されたので、スラバヤを出港させたのです。潜水艦の報告とはだいぶ違い、重巡2、軽巡3を含む大きな艦隊で、どうしようか悩むところ。せめて九六陸攻が爆弾を1-2発でも命中させていればと悔やんでしまいます。でもまあここまで来たんですし、また連合軍TFは主砲の弾薬を3分の1くらいにまで減らしているでしょうし、接触しそうなルートに向かわせてみることにしました。貧乏な側がこういうことをすべきでないことも分かってはいるのですが、したい放題されてそのまま帰って行くのを見てるのもね。しっかりした情勢認識と、冷静な判断が必要な、軍人には向いてないなと我ながら思います。

今日のデザートはAPD Manley。オーストラリア東岸のケアンズ近海で、RO-63が夜に一回雷撃して失敗。しかしその場でねばって、午後になってから再度の雷撃で魚雷を一本命中させ、撃沈しました。 Manleyは第一次大戦中に建造されたCaldwel級の駆逐艦で、APDに改装された第一号、APD-1だそうです。Meraukeに部隊を輸送して、ブリスベーンあたりに帰還する途中だったのかなと思います。
