中部ビルマの飛行場のうちMandalayとMeiktilaはこれまでも連日の爆撃にさらされていましたが、 昭和17年10月31日にはMagweも爆撃を受けました。sweepとあわせて8波の空襲で、32機のB17Eと16機のB17Fによる爆撃で、地上でKi-44-IIa Tojoが5機、Ki-46-II Dinahが1機破壊されました。
この日のMagweにはKi-44-IIa Tojoが2個戦隊いて、一つはSilcharのsweepに行っていて無事でした。もう一つはHelenの護衛で出撃する予定でしたが、Helenが出撃できずTojoも飛行場にとどまっていたので地上で5機も撃破されてしまいました。以前のエントリーでも触れましたが、地上で撃破されるとパイロットも死傷する仕様です。ご覧の通り5名がKIA、1名がWIAになっています。地上レーダーのバグや高々度sweepの問題よりも、個人的にはこの地上でパイロットが死ぬ仕様の方がずっと嫌です。
今日はB17だけでしたが、明日以降はこの戦線に合計70機以上配備されているBlenheimも爆撃に加わる予感がします。そうするとMagwe飛行場も閉鎖されてしまうかも知れません。engineerをもっと増強しないとだめですね。飛行場が機能しないと、Oilも爆撃されるでしょうし。
